Thika road darkness blamed on vandals

The Kenya National Highways Authority has blamed vandalism for the darkness on the Thika Superhighway.

According to its department of maintenance, vandals have raided control boxes on the highway, crippling the lighting system.

“We are procuring a management contract which we have already advertised in a local daily. The contractor will oversee the maintenance and security of the highway,” said a source who wished to remain anonymous as he is not allowed to talk in an official capacity.

He added that the delay in the replacement of the control boxes was due to their high cost compared to the authority’s tight budget.

Driving on the road at night has become a nightmare because motorists are forced to switch on full lights for better visibility.

This has in turn been causing a blinding effect on drivers in the opposite direction, making it risky for all road users.
