Team Kenya languishing in a Rio slum after Nock ‘booked cheaper flights’ -PHOTOS

Team Kenya captain Wesley Korir has alleged mistreatment of athletes in Rio after the organisers closed the Olympics village on Wednesday.

Mr Korir said they were stuck in Rio due to National Olympics Committee of Kenya incompetence.

“The best country in the world will spent their night in this ‘slum’ like area in rio after the olympic village was closed !!! Unbelievable mistreatment of athletes !!! (sic)” wrote Mr Korir on Facebook.

Some of his followers, however, wondered why some athletes are still stuck in Rio de Janeiro four days after the Games concluded on Sunday.

“Nock booked our flights late,” he responded. “They looked for cheaper flights.”

Nock officials were not available for a comment.

The new claims came on the day Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario recorded a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters, in connection to the crises that dogged team Kenya during the Rio Olympics.

Sports Kenya chief finance officer Francis Githaiga was also arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officials over the management fiasco.

Earlier in the week, Mr Korir, who is also the MP for Cherengany, claimed that he failed to complete the men’s marathon on Sunday due to a water mix up at 30km. Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge won the gold in the race.
