Task force formed to improve performance in city schools
A task force has been formed to find ways of narrowing the gap between public and private schools in Nairobi County.
The team seeks to bridge the disparity in national examination performance between learners in public and private schools.
The task force will be chaired by Dr Mark Matunga, the Education Technology Advisor at Microsoft West, East, Central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands and will incorporate other educationists in the country.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero said the low transition rate from primary to secondary school among pupils in public institutions was worrying, hence the need for the task force to come up with appropriate interventions.
“There is an urgent need to improve the performance in public and informal schools to avoid a class-based society, in which only those who can afford to attend private schools have access to better education,” the governor said.
Dr Kidero, who met head teachers from the county’s public schools during the launch of the county task force, observed that most of those who scored more than 400 out of 500 marks were from private schools.
