For most Nairobians, the weekend is the best time to do shopping and for those looking for souvenirs or African artifacts, Maasai Market is the place to visit.

This vibrant market is a true festival of  colour and form, and offers shoppers an opportunity to buy some of the rich collections of African arts and crafts. The market attracts tourists and locals alike all looking for unique handicrafts to adorn their homes, themselves or as gifts to friends and family.

You can find anything from clothes to wooden and brass carvings .

Other goods include colourful kikoys, curios, baskets, beadworks, paintings, carving, sandals, shukas and many other interesting African handicrafts.

The market’s venue rotates between different shopping centres and other locations, and is open from 8am  to 6pm.

They have scheduled sales in particular locations. On Wednesday, you will find the market at Capital Centre on Mombasa Road.

On Thursday, the traders can be found at the Junction Shopping Mall, third floor parking and  on Saturday and Sunday, they are at the Supreme Court parking. Also on Sunday, you can find some of the traders at the Yaya Centre parking lot.

The beautiful bit about this market is that almost all the products sold are uniquely Kenyan, and the range of items is very impressive.

Most of the times, you will be dealing with the actual people making them and it is not strange to find women threading beads and making jewellery as they chat.

With Sh300, you can walk away with an assortment of products that will spice up your house including clothes and sandals.

The sculptures and crafts are very appealing and unlike other shops in town, here, the likelihood that you will be meeting the artisan themselves is very high.

You might not like what they have but can make an order and it will be delivered.
