Suspended Citizen TV journalists resume work

Citizen TV news anchors Swaleh Mdoe and Mwanahamisi Hamadi, together with other journalists and producers, resumed work on Thursday after being suspended over bribery claims.

Sources at the television station owned by Royal Media Services confirmed that all the suspended crew reported to work on Thursday.

The journalists were suspended on April 20 over accusations that they received money from a prominent politician in order not to air an embarrassing story about the politician.

Besides the two Swahili anchors, others who were suspended were editors Shisia Wasilwa, Kimeli arap Kimeli, Yusuf Ali and video editors identified as Mumbi and Lillian.

It is, however, not clear if the celebrated anchors will be allowed back on screen.

Under the terms of their suspension, they were to stay away from work for 10 days pending investigations into the incident.

In their absence, weekend anchors Kanze Dena and Lulu Hassan took charge of the station’s Swahili news desk.

During Monday’s NTV Press Pass show, fellow journalists condemned the practice of obtaining bribes so as to tilt news coverage.

All the panelists at the weekly show that discusses media issues in the country agreed that bribe-taking was tainting the image of the profession.
