Sonko promises to improve street lighting in Nairobi schools

Nairobi County government is set to improve street lighting in schools across the county to ensure safety of students and teachers.

Governor Mike Sonko said that his administration has already set aside funds for the project in the current financial year for the exercise is set to begin in the next few weeks.

He stated that he was also aware that a number of schools in Nairobi still face immense challenges such as lack of clean water, missing perimeter walls to enhance security, insufficient electricity supply and lack of general infrastructure.

“I undertake that my administration will ensure improvements in all the above areas. To start off, roads around several of schools will be upgraded this financial year,” said Sonko on Saturday.

The City Hall boss reiterated that his administration takes education seriously pointing out that Nairobi is the only county in the country that offers 100 per cent free Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).

SCHOLARSHIPS

“We have set a capitation of Sh3, 815 per child so that parents do not have to pay any money for their children,” he said.

The governor explained that when he took over the reins at City Hall about a year ago, only 13,485 children were enrolled in public ECDEs across the county out of an estimated 300,000 children of school-going age in the capital city representing only 5 per cent.

This low enrolment, he says, has currently shot up to 17, 000 children as at the close of second term this year due to the capitation his administration is currently rolling out to parents in the county.

The governor also said the county government is also offering full scholarships to 60,000 secondary school students as part of his quest to improve access to education in Nairobi.
