Sserunkuma the best


Gor Mahia player Dan Sserunkuma was named the Nile Special/Ugandan Sports Press Association Footballer of the Year during an awards gala.

According to the club’s website, the event organised by sports journalists was in its 28th year.

The award is considered Uganda’s most prestigious and top journalists from the East Africa region and international ones are usually invited.

Sserunkuma was recognised for his brilliant performance during the Kenyan Premier League. He emerged as champions Gor Mahia’s top scorer last year.

“I am humbled because my country recognised the efforts I make in Kenya and rewarded me. It motivates me to work harder for both my club and country,” said Sserunkuma.

Gor Mahia tactician Scotsman Bobby Williamson, who is a former Uganda Cranes head coach, praised the striker for winning the title, saying he worked hard and is a worthy winner.

“Sserunkuma deserves the title, he is committed to the team and lets his football do the talking. He is destined to win more,” said Williamson. 

The player was previously the league’s top scorer and the Player of the Year in 2012.

The award was received on behalf of Sserunkuma by former Ugandan international Edgar Watson.

A total of 45 sportsmen and women who sparkled last year received awards in various disciplines.

Sserunkuma, 25, moved to Kenya in 2011 and joined Premier League side Nairobi City Stars.

He moved to Gor in 2012 and his partnership with Rama Salim propelled Gor to the top of the league this season.
