World football in crisis as Fifa suspends Blatter and company

The ongoing investigations on corruption within world football’s governing body Fifa have finally nabbed President Sepp Blatter.

This is after Fifa’s Ethics Committee suspended Blatter, 79, alongside Uefa President Michel Platini for 90 days pending the outcome of an investigation into illegal financial dealings.

Also suspended is Fifa Secretary General Jérôme Valcke (who has already been put on leave by Fifa) and former former Fifa Vice President Chung Mong-joon. The latter has also been fined £67,000 (Sh 10.5 million).

INVESTIGATIONS

“The grounds for these decisions are the investigations that are being carried out by the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee. The chairman of the chamber is Dr Cornel Borbély. The investigation into Joseph S. Blatter is being carried out by Robert Torres, the investigation into Michel Platini by Vanessa Allard,” a statement on fifa.com. read.

Fifa further said that during this time, the individuals in question are banned from all football activities on a national and international level. The bans come into force immediately.

This development elevates the crisis at Fifa to a whole new level. With the earlier suspensions of nine senior officials Blatter’s new predicament will heighten speculation as to whom is in charge of the Zurich-based institution.

Blatter, who was re-elected as Fifa President, mid this year had promised to step down following widespread allegations of corruption within Fifa.
