What Gor, Leopards fans need to know ahead of derby

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans have been urged to come to the stadium early for Sunday’s ‘Mashemeji Derby’ even as stringent security measures have been put in place at the match venue.

Hosts AFC Leopards say that there will be thorough frisking at the Nyayo National Stadium entry points, and that fans seated in the terraces will not be allowed to cross over to the VIP section for shelter in the event that the heavens open up during the game.

Nairobi OCPD, Stadium Security chairman GMT Ottieno, officials of the two clubs and members of the Sports Kenya board announced on Friday’s security briefing held at the Nyayo Stadium boardroom that nobody will be allowed inside the outer perimeter fence of the match venue without a ticket which should be purchased beforehand.

“Security will be intensified during the match because of the threat we are facing as a country given that the huge number of fans expected make the venue a suitable target for terrorists.

“We have requested for a minimum of 300 police officers who will include dog handlers and those on horseback, and they will sweep round the stadium at 10am with sniffer dogs before the gates open at midday,” Ottieno said.

NO SALE OF ALCOHOL

The stadium security chairman also warned that no alcohol will be sold at the venue and that armed police officers will be deployed around gate six to provide a buffer zone to separate the two sets of fans.

Big Brother Company will handle the sale of tickets which will retail at Sh 600 (VIP) and Sh300 (terraces).

K’Ogalo fans entering the terraces area have been assigned gate two and three, while Ingwe fans will enter through gates nine and ten.

Gate A has been reserved for Gor Mahia fans entering the VIP section, while Leopards will access the section though Gate B. No tickets will be sold at the stadium.

Meanwhile, Nassur Doka will be the center referee for the match assisted by Langata Prisons officer Michael Mwangi, Stephen Maina and Thika-based Raphael Nduati whil  James Theuri will be the match commissioner.

Ticket venues: Kenya Cinema, City Stadium, Riadha House, Langata Road and Opposite Nyayo Stadium, Police Post.
