Uganda Cranes players injured in accident after visit to Museveni

Two members of the Uganda national football team sustained minor injuries in a road accident along the Mbale-Kampala highway on Tuesday afternoon, which left several others dead according to reports in the Ugandan media.

The Uganda Cranes contingent, fresh from winning the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup last weekend, was heading back to the capital after paying a courtesy call to President Yoweri Museveni in the Northern town of Soroti.

Reports indicate the bus lost control after a tyre burst and hit a stationery matatu on the side of the road. Some passengers in the public service vehicle died on the spot.

Cranes players Hassan Wasswa and Dennis Dazo suffered minor injuries during the incident.

The incident has attracted speculation on social media, with supporters of the team terming the 480km return trip between Kampala and Soroti to see the President as “unnecessary”.

The team had paid a courtesy call to Vice President Edward Ssekandi on the eve of the accident.
