Tusker’s commitment at SportPesa tournament questioned

Tusker players’ commitment at the ongoing SportPesa Super Cup has been questioned following the team’s dramatic loss to Yanga SC in their opening match on Monday evening.

The Kenyan champions could only manage a barren draw at fulltime against their Tanzanian counterparts who fielded a second string side at the half-full Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The brewers thereafter went on to lose on post match penalties, with Clifford Alwanga and Ghana striker Owusu missing the crucial spot kicks.

BUNDLED OUT

This result ensured the Kenyan side were bundled out of the competition at the opening stage.

oour sources in Tanzania indicate it would have been a whole different scenario.

“The more money we make for the club, the lesser we are paid (as bonus). It’s better we follow the FIFA calendar, get a rest and wait for the league fixtures,” one of the team’s senior players who spoke off the record told Nairobi News.

This is in reference to last year’s stand-off between the players and management in which the playing squad felt they were not ‘properly appreciated’ for winning the league and cup double.

The winner of the SportPesa Super Cup will earn Sh3m in prize money. The semifinalists will take home sh500,000, whilst Sh250,000 has been reserved for the quarterfinalists.
