Tusker, Gor advance in GOtv Shield

By ISAAC SWILA September 20th, 2015 2 min read

Gor Mahia, Tusker and Muhoroni Youth on Sunday advanced to the round of 16 of the GOtv Shield tournament but holders Sofapaka crashed out after losing 5-3 to third-tier side Administration Police on post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time at Ruaraka.

At Kasarani, Tusker were ruthless hitting GFE 105, 5-0 while Gor laboured to 3-2 win over Ushuru in a 3pm kick-off at the same venue.

Ageless striker John Baraza fired Sofapaka to a 38th-minute lead but the law enforcers replied in the 80th minute through Geoffrey Muhando before completing the turnaround, winning 5-3 on penalties.

In Muhoroni, coach Paul Nkata’s fairy tale run with the side continued after they overcame KCB 4-2 on post-match penalties after a barren draw in normal time.

At a sun-soaked Kasarani Stadium, Tusker skipper Jesse Were bagged a second half hat-trick to add onto a Kevin Kimani’s first-half goal and Elly Otieno’s own goal to confirm the brewers passage to the next round.

QUESTIONABLE CALLS

Gor Mahia were however made to sweat by Ken Kenyatta’s Ushuru before confirming their place. Centre referee Anthony Ogwayo made questionable calls in the match, ruling out a Meddie Kagere’s goal in the 66th minute and red-carding Ushuru’s Joseph Shikokoti for a dangerous tackle on Khalid Aucho.

Kagere however atoned for the cancelled goal, stabbing home from the box in the 70th minute to add onto his beautifully-taken header at the stroke of half time after Innocent Wafula had done the donkey work. Collins Okoth was the scorer of Gor Mahia’s other goal.

Ushuru scored their goals through Muhammad Hassan in the ninth minute and Philemon Otieno in the 26th minute.

Tusker, Gor and Muhoroni now join AFC Leopards and Bandari who confirmed their places on Saturday with victories over Wazito FC and Bondo United respectively.
