Why Kenyans are annoyed with SuperSport’s EPL broadcast

Pay TV channel, SuperSport, has been blasted by some of its local subscribers over a move to extend its broadcast rights of the English Premier League and perceived high subscription fees.

Kenyans have taken to social media to express their displeasure with the South African owned broadcaster following the announcement of the deal that will lapse in 2021.

Apparently, the announcement comes just days after the same channel pulled the plug on a multi-billion shilling deal with the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), something that Kenyans have not taken kindly.

In their reaction on Facebook, a majority of Kenyans questioned why KPL lost the rights to other European competitions such as the German Bundesliga and Italian Seria A which have since been scooped by StarTimes.

This move comes at a time when there are indications that SuperSport is likely to exit the Kenyan market, having already terminated a number of weekly shows on its SuperSport 219 East channel.
