Players who went on drinking spree in Ethiopia to be punished
Football Kenya Federation has termed as “disturbing” reports of indiscipline and errant behaviour emanating from the national team’s camp in Ethiopia and promised to take action on the culprits.
The federation was responding to an exclusive report on Nairobi News, of how three members of the Harambee Stars’ playing unit and an official were caught on a drinking spree on Friday night at an entertainment joint in Hawassa city, hours after the team suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to Zanzibar at the ongoing Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
“FKF has learnt with dismay of reports of isolated cases of indiscipline by some players during the on going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup,” a statement by the Federation’s media liaison officer John Kariuki reads.
“Our media has been awash with stories claiming the team is cash-strapped, and now Kenyans are wondering how all of a sudden the players are reported to be in a party mood. It has been established that some members of the (team’s) technical bench are abetting this vice. We wish to assure all that drastic changes will be done in the technical bench and action taken against those involved,” the statement continues.
SEX ORGY
This is the second time in a space of two months that Harambee Stars players are attracting negative publicity for their actions off the field of play.
In early September, it was reported that some members of the team were involved in a sex orgy at the team’s hotel in Nairobi before a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Zambia in Nairobi.
At the time, it was reported that three players sneaked in a female companion to the team’s hotel where they indulged in a sex orgy before the team went on to lose the match 2-1 to Zambia.
The players who were implicated in the incident were briefly suspended by FKF but they have since been reinstated into the squad after “asking for forgiveness”.
Stars, who qualified for the knockout phase of this year’s Cecafa tourney with four points from three games, remain in the running to retain the regional crown which comes with a Sh3 million prize money. The team will face Rwanda in the quarter finals on Tuesday.
