Prisons volleyball team sweat over participation in continental event

Kenya Prisons and General Service Unit (GSU) are hopeful of securing a podium finish at this year’s edition of the Africa Men’s Volleyball Club Championship that begins on Thursday morning in Sousse, Tunisia.

Prisons officials are however yet to formally confirm the team’s trip to North Africa for the 12-day event with team manager David Kilundo citing ‘financial challenges’ for the delay.

“Things are moving slower than expected. We are awaiting clearance from the Ministry (of Interior and Coordination of National Government) but we are still hopeful of making the trip,” Kilundo told Nairobi News.

GSU are however set to leave the country for Tunisia on Thursday morning at 1:20am for the 12 hour journey that will include a stopover at Doha, a development that has left the Prisons camp ‘frustrated’ according to a player who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Ironically, GSU have been cleared to travel to Tunisia by the same Ministry which is holding our application. This is very frustrating to us,” the player told Nairobi News.

Should they eventually make the trip, Prisons coach Gideon Chenje will rely on the services of three experienced players namely Sila Kipruto, Dennis Mokua and Mike Chemos, all of whom have previously enjoyed professional spells in Europe and Asia.

“Our preparations have been okay as we have added gym work to our sessions. We are seeking a medal bracket in Tunisia,” Chenje said.
