Olunga’s Catalan club Girona end day-log strike
Kenya international striker Michael Olunga’s club Girona have officially ended a day-long strike announced in solidarity with the political situation in Spain.
The Spanish team announced via its official website that its players would not train or engage in any activities for the whole of Tuesday.
Similarly, the coaches and administrators were asked to stay off work for that duration.
Olunga is however away from the club on international duty with the national team squad in Asia for friendly matches against Iraq and Thailand.
“Girona adheres to the deadline convened in Catalonia for tomorrow Tuesday, October 3. In this sense, the training of the first team as well as all of the white and red base football teams is suspended,” the club statement read in part.
REFERENDUM
“The club (also) condemns the violent and repressive actions experienced on Sunday in Catalonia and shows its support and solidarity with the citizens and institutions of the country.”
Currently placed 16th on the 20 team table standings, Girona FC is based in Girona City, in the north east of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia in Spain, located some 100km from Barcelona.
The city has of late been caught up in the feud between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, seeking to be recognised as an independent state.
The political situation turned ugly on Sunday,when Spanish riot police fired rubber bullets and forced their way into activist-held polling stations in Catalonia as thousands flooded the streets to vote in an independence referendum banned by Madrid.
At least 91 people were injured in clashes as police cracked down down on what the Spanish central government has branded a “farce”.
