Olunga’s double strike sinks highly fancied Congolese

Micheal Olunga scored twice to help Harambee Stars defeat the highly fancied Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in an international friendly played at a packed Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.

The Chinese based striker struck twice either side of the break, with the second goal a tap in following a good move and cross from the team’s new sensation Samuel Onyango.

In between, former Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta scored a beauty of a free kick from just outside the box to hand the Congolese the equaliser and what turned out to be a consolation goal.

STRONG LINE UPS

Both teams fielded their best available line ups with Kenya parading the likes of Jesse Were, David Owino, Paul Were, Brian Mandela and captain Victor Wanyama.

The Leopards meanwhile had Kakuta, Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba and TP Mazembe forward Junior Kambenanga.

In fact, Kambenanga had the ball in the net on the stroke of full time, but the referee ruled the strike out for an infringement in the box earlier on.

Kenya which also drew 1-1 with Uganda at the same venue on Thursday, was using this match to prepare for the 2019 Africa Cup qualifiers which begin in June.
