Obua injured in Ugandan team crash

Former Uganda international David Obua was among senior players of a Ugandan top flight club who were injured in a grisly road accident involving the team bus in Western Uganda on Tuesday evening.

The accident involving Kampala City Council Football Club (KCC) occurred at Nekongolero, about 30kms to Mbarara, Uganda’s second largest town.

“There are several injuries suffered to Savio Kabugo, Joseph Ochaya (Uganda Cranes players) and ex-Cranes forward Obua, and Adrian Lumala – a club official,” KCC’s CEO David Tamale told Ugandan site Kawowo Sports.

The injured were rushed to Mbarara Hospital in critical condition but are since believed to be out of danger.

KCC FC is primed to play another popular Ugandan club SC Villa in the domestic cup final (Uganda Cup) at Kyamate play grounds in Ntungamo on Saturday. It remains unclear whether the match will go ahead following this incident.

SNUBBED MUSEVENI

Obua, 31, who has previously turned out for both Scottish side Hearts FC and South African side Kaizer Chiefs, has been training with KCC for the last few months, perhaps in anticipation of earning a professional contract.

He is best remembered for snubbing President Yoweri Museveni when the later paid a visit to the Uganda Cranes camp in November 2011, hours to a crucial 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Kenya in Kampala.

Subsequently, he was kicked out of the team’s camp by then Cranes coach Bobby Williamson (now in charge of Kenya’s Harambee Stars) and Uganda went ahead to draw 0-0 against Zedekiah Otieno’s Stars when a win of any kind would have ensured Uganda a place at the Cup of Nations for the first time in three decades.

Pundits believe Uganda would have beaten Kenya had Obua – who had scored five goals during the qualification campaign – played in that match.
