Nairobi-born boxer faints after winning London bout

Nairobi-born boxer Erick Ochieng fainted in the ring at York Hall, London, on Sunday after winning over North Ireland’s Paddy Gallagher.

The 26 year-old boxer looked dizzy moments after the match had ended and he retreated to a corner looking faint.

Parademics rushed in, gave him oxygen, before carrying him from the ring in a stretcher.

He was born in Kaloleni, Nairobi and later moved to London to join his parents.

Ochieng  had just been declared the winner of the quarter-final match of the Prizefighter tournament and was set to meet Mark Douglas in the semi-finals.

Gallagher took Ochieng’s place in the semi-finals and defeated Mark Douglas in 31 seconds.

Gallagher however lost to UK’s Johnny Coyle in the Welterweight finals.

Later on Sunday, Ochieng announced on his Facebook account that he was fine.

“In all things I give Christ glory. I am fine and in good health, it was too hot in the venue for that cause I was feeling dizzy after a great performance and the paramedics were doing their job for health and safety reasons and routine. God bless, Eagle”
