Mercy Cherono splashes Sh1.5m on prayer trip to Nigeria to revive athletics career – VIDEO
Kenya’s popular athlete Mercy Cherono has revealed that she recently spent an estimated Sh1.5 million shillings on a trip to Nigeria in search of divine intervention for the the revival of her faltering career.
The 26 year old, who is a resident of Eldoret, alongside her fiancé Edmond Ng’etich, visited one of Nigeria’s biggest worship places – The Synagogue Church of All Nations – which is owned by renowned preacher Prophet Balgun Joshua of the TB Joshua Ministries.
A return air ticket for a Nairobi and Lagos/Abuja flight currently costs atleast Sh110,000 for economy class, and upto double that amount for business and first class. This costs exclude expenditure such as local transport, accommodation, food and offerings.
It is while in the West African country that Cherono, considered one of the most beautiful athletes in Kenyan sporting circles, also revealed she had competed at the Rio Olympic Games with an injury that she hid from the coaches and medical staff for fear of being dropped from the team.
Cherono, who finished a disappointing fourth in the women’s 5,000m final in Rio, is yet to compete since.
PROMISING CAREER
The reigning Commonwealth Games champion expressed the desired to get prayed for to heal niggling injuries which are threatening to ruin what was once a promising career.
A 19-minute video uploaded on YouTube shows Cherono narrating to thousands of faithful at the congregation about her recent challenges on the track.
“Before I came to the church my husband asked me to seek deliverance because I used to train well but before the race, I would get an injury,” she says.
“Before the (Rio) Olympics, I had a stress fracture that I hadn’t noticed, I kept it from the coach and went on taking pain killers. I hid it from the coach because I was afraid he would remove me from the team.”
Cherono becomes the latest high profile celebrity to visit the 53 year old Nigerian pastor, a move made by among others ailing Nigerian President Mohammadu Buhari.
