Kenya Sevens storm Singapore Cup finals

The national sevens rugby team has made it to the finals of the Singapore Sevens where they will meet Fiji on Sunday afternoon (2:38pm – Kenyan time).

A last gasp Collins Injera penalty 40m out was enough for Kenya to snatch a 15-12 victory against a polished Argentina in a tightly contested Cup semis match.

Shujaa made it to the semis after overpowering France 28-7 in the quarters.

The victory will see Kenya play in the Cup final of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for the first time since 2013 when the team was being coached by Mike Friday.

Argentina drew first blood through Fernando Luna on the stroke of half-time when he stepped inside a weak attempted tackle from Augustine Lugonzo. Gaston Revol converted as Argentina led 7-0 at the break.

Kenya returned in the second half a rejuvenated side as Lugonzo atoned for his costly error by running in a try from halfway line. Oliech converted for Kenya to tie the scores at 7-7.

BRILLIANT TRY

Argentine went ahead again with a try from Axel Muller. Revol, however, missed the conversion as the South Americans led 12-7.

Once again Kenya tied the scores with a brilliant try from Wanyama whose conversion Injera missed. But Injera soon became the hero of the match as he kept a cool head to score a 40m drop goal after Argentina were penalized in the closing seconds.

In the quarter finals, Kenya came from behind to subdue France 28-7. Oscar Ayodi, Humphrey Kayange, Willy Ambaka and Andrew Amonde all touched down for Kenya with Sammy Oliech converting on each occasion.

A Jeremy Aicardi try and Stephen Perez’s conversion had given the French a 7-0 lead before Kenya turned the game on its head.

In the first semi final, a resilient Fiji fought back from behind on three occasions before edging South Africa 26-21 at the buzzer in a thrilling end to end contest.
