KCB hold Ingwe, declare they are in title race

KCB Head Coach Abdallah Juma has praised his charges after they held CAF Confederations Cup participants AFC Leopards to a 1-1 draw at the Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.

Francis Ouma, the 2008 KPL top scorer, gave the bankers the lead in the 15th minute through a well worked shot after weaving past the AFC Leopards backline.

KCB maintained the lead until Jacob Keli came to Ingwe’s rescue in the 58th minute, tapping in a pass from Allan Wanga.

Coach Juma says he was impressed by his charges and believes Hedmond Maunda, whom he recruited from Western Stima, was the best performer in the tie.

“Maunda followed every instruction I gave him, and I believe he deserved the man of the match award. I knew we were better off than AFC in terms of match fitness because we played several friendlies in the off season, including some with KPL teams like Top Fry, so we were always going to have an edge over them,” he said in an interview with Nairobi News.

Coach Juma said his charges will be challenging for the title, and that they will claim several scalps in the run up to the title.

“We have a good squad and I believe in each and every one of the boys. At worst we can settle for a top three finish, as we plan to better our performance last season. We may be work in progress, but we shall not take any steps backwards,” said Juma.

KCB finished fourth last season to the surprise of many and scooped several awards at the KPL awards, including player of the year which went to Jacob Keli who has since left for AFC Leopards.
