Herculean task for Gor, AFC in return leg

Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards lost in the first leg of their preliminary CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup rounds respectively.

Gor Mahia went down 2-3 to Esperance in a pulsating thriller at Nyayo Stadium, losing at the death when Haithen Jouiwi scored the winner for the Tunisian side.

Dan Sserunkuma’s opener was cancelled out by Jouiwi’s first goal of the match.

The two teams were locked at 1-1 at half time with Gor having the lion’s share of possession.

Yannick Djeng gave Esperance a 2-1 lead before Gor’s Haron Shakava scored his first ever goal for the club.

Jouiwi broke K’ogalo’s hearts with the winner.

AFC Leopards on the other hand lost 0-2 to Supersport United in Pretoria. David Mathebula and Benet Chenene did the honours for Matsatsantsa.

Both clubs will have to play the games of their lives if they are to move to the next stage of the respective tournaments.

Gor, having conceded three away goals, will have to win by a margin of two goals if they are to progress.

Should AFC win the return leg, they will have to make sure Supersport United do not score in case the away goal rule comes in to play.
