Harambee Stars striker Jesse Were pulls plug on Ajax Cape Town move

Talks between South African football club Ajax Cape Town and Kenyan striker Jesse Were over a possible transfer have broken down, Nairobi News understands.

Reliable sources indicate the South African club was keen to lure the Zesco United forward to the PSL in January, a move that would have linked the 27 year-old with compatriot Victor Ali Abondo

Indeed, a bid in the region of Sh12 million was accepted by the Zambia based club in November. But negotiations between Were’s representatives and those of his potential employers failed to strike a deal over personal terms.

WITHDRAWN THE OFFER

“It looks like Ajax have withdrawn the offer. Which isn’t a good thing, but under the circumstances it makes sense. Their offer to the player was nowhere near his current worth. Considering the tax rates, the deal couldnt be sanctioned.” a source privy to the negotiations said.

It is believed that Ajax offered Were a deal closer to Sh450,000 a month, a marginal increase to what the player takes home at the Ndola based club. Were’s representatives though are looking for something closer to sh700,000 plus bonuses.

OPENS DOOR

This development opens the door to other clubs keen on the former Tusker FC player, who scored 22 goals in all competitions in the Zambia league last season.

The other interested parties include Free State Stars and Golden Arrows in the PSL, Democratic Republic of Congo side TP Mazembe, plus a couple of clubs in Morrocco, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Tunisia.
