Harambee Stars static in Fifa rankings

Kenya’s national football team Harambee Stars have remained static in the latest Fifa rankings published on Wednesday in the world soccer governing body website.

Stars stayed at position 116 globally and 35 in the continent on 266 points. The team’s last major assignment was an impressive 1-1 draw against Republic of Congo away in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on June 14, 2015.

They however failed to build on that outcome as its squad of home-based players were beaten 2-0 by Ethiopia in an African Nations Championship qualifier match a week later. Ethiopia went on to hold Kenya at home in the return fixture to eliminate Kenya from the campaign.

TOP RANKED

Stars opponents in the 2017 Afcon qualifier, Zambia, whom they tackle in Nairobi in September, are 73rd globally while neighbours Uganda are 74th, Rwanda are 91st and Ethiopia 99th.

Algeria is the top ranked nation in Africa followed by Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Tunisia and Senegal in that order.

Globally, Argentina, despite failing to lift lthe Copa America held last month in Chile, are ranked first followed by Belgium and Germany who have exchanged positions.

Stars under coach Bobby Williamson are expected to report to camp in the next fortnight to begin preparations for the match against Zambia in Nairobi on September 6.
