Gor Mahia’s Walusimbi relishes Nations Cup challenge

Gor Mahia defender Godfrey Walusimbi says he can’t wait to compete at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations which commence in Gabon next week.

The left footed dribbler is among only two Kenyan Premier League based players who will feature in the year’s edition of the biennial continental football showpiece.

The 27 year old has been named in Uganda’s final squad for the tournament alongside Tusker FC’s Shafique Batambuze.

“For us Ugandans, this chance comes once in our lifetime. I cannot wait to play there and make some piece of history. I am in good shape and we have been preparing well,” said Walusimbi.

NOTABLE PLAYERS

“Of course, I would not have been there had it not been for the support from my teammates at Gor Mahia and the competitiveness in the Kenyan league,” he added.

Walusimbi, who has been a sure starter for the Uganda Cranes in the past four years, is now set to rub shoulders with the continent’s established players, when East Africa’s top side face Ghana, Mali and Egypt in Gabon.

Other other notable players in the Ugandan squad are Belgium based forward Farouk Miya, Mamelodi Sundowns keeper Dennis Onyango, plus midfielders Khalid Aucho and Geoffrey “Baba” Kizito, both of whom are former Gor Mahia players.

Kenya failed to qualify for this competition following a poor show during the qualification rounds, where Harambee Stars finished bottom in a group that included Guinea Bissau, Zambia and the Republic of Congo.
