Gor progress in GOtv Shield


Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia launched their campaign for the GOtv Shield knockout tournament with a 3-0 win over Lang’ata Gremio at the Nairobi City Stadium on Wednesday.

On form Rwandan forward Meddie Kagere put K’Ogalo ahead in the 13th minute before George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo doubled the lead in the 62d minute.

Liberian defender Dirkir Glay wrapped up Gor’s victory with 11 minutes to go. The scoreline could have been wider had right back Karim Nizigiyamana converted a penalty in the first half.

Earlier at the same venue, Police beat Kariobangi Sharks 3-2 in a five-goal thriller to progress to the next round.

Willis Rampei came off the bench to bag a brace for Police with David Oluoch the other goal scorer. Sharks responded with goals from Mathew Odonj and Stephen Odhiambo.

At the Municipal Stadium in Mombasa, Modern Coast Rangers overcame Malindi’s Magarini FC 5-2 on post-match penalties after a 1-1 deadlock in normal time.

Modern Coast took the lead in the 19th minute through their new signing Emmanuel Onyancha but Magarini levelled in the 40th via Mohamed Said’s effort.

POST-MATCH PENALTIES

In Mondays’ matches, Jerry Santos and Anthony Gathu scored a goal apiece in Posta Rangers’ 2-0 win over Nanyuki Youth while Nakumatt also beat Mumbi Nationale 3-1.

In another match at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Nairobi based Palos FC shocked  Kakamega Homeboyz 4-2 on post-match penalties in a tough match that ended scoreless in normal time.

“The boys played their hearts out even though we failed to score in normal time. We are going to prepare for the second round seriously,” Palos coach Paul Ogai told Daily Nation Sports.

At the same time, Shabana have ended their first leg football Kenyan Federation League matches with a 1-0 win over West Kenyan Sugar in mid-week league fixture at Bukhungu Stadium.

Former Gor Mahia and Western Stima midfielder Francis Ocholla scored the all-important goal in the 20th minute of the game.
