Gor Mahia fans fined for hooliganism at club’s meeting

Four Gor Mahia fans have been fined Sh5000 each for interrupting a meeting of the top Kenya premier league club in Nairobi last Friday.

Kelvin Ochieng, Zakayo Ayieko, John Otieno and Leonard Onyango were convicted on their own plea of guilty.

A Kibera court sentenced them to two months in prison if they fail to pay the fine.

The prosecution’s case was that on February 17 2017, the accused, with others who were not in court, stormed an office at Nyayo National Stadium where the club’s officials were holding a strategy meeting.

REFUSED TO LEAVE

They were informed that the meeting was for officials only but they refused to leave.

“After sometime, they went out and started making loud noise prompting some of the officials to go out and calm them,” prosecutor Mary Wangele told the court.

“ The accused started hurling stones and water bottles at the officials and tried to escape from the scene. However, they were arrested and booked at Nyayo Stadium police post and the charges before court preferred against them,” the prosecutor added.

In mitigation, the accused admitted interrupting the meeting they felt they should have been invited.

“We are branch officials and there are issues we wanted addressed,” Ochieng told the court.

Sentencing them, Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani noted that soccer hooliganism is synonymous with Gor Mahia fans.

“Each of you will pay a fine of Sh5000. In default you will serve two months in prison,” she ruled.
