Gor, Leopards to relocate from traditional home venues

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards could soon be forced to shift their domestic matches to outside Nairobi, in the wake of plans by the Government of Kenya to refurbish two stadiums in the City.

The facilities in question, the Nyayo and City Stadium, are earmarked for a Sh 150 million worth of renovation in readiness for the 2017 World Youth Championships, an event that will be hosted at both venues.

The 30,000 seater Nyayo Stadium will stage the main event, whilst City, which can only accommodate 10,000 spectators and is situated about a kilometre away, will provide an additional warm up and training track for the participating athletes.

Both venues will be closed for the period of the renovations, which are expected to last between 6 months and a year.

OFFICIAL HOME

This development was confirmed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario last week, at a function which he unveiled the Local Organising Committee for the Youth Championships.

“We need to start the preparations now, hosting an international sporting event requires detailed logistical challenges which all need to be ironed out well in advance,” Wario said.

Acting Athletics Kenya (AK) chairman General Jackson Tuwei will head the LOC, which also includes Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mweke, Sports Secretary Jasper Rugut and AK Secretary General David Okeyo.

City and Nyayo Stadia are the official home grounds for Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards who draw a huge bulk of their fans from within the city.
