FKF presidential aspirant vows to disband Harambee Stars
Football Kenya Federation presidential aspirant Nick Mwendwa says he will disband the current Harambee Stars set up if elected into office.
Speaking during an interview on local television on Saturday afternoon, Mwendwa shared out his plans for the national football team.
“We will have to start afresh as regard the national team. Bring in fresh young players, prepare them well and look forward to seeing the results in three or four years’ time. I urge the fans to be patient. In case we qualify for any competition in the next three years, that will be a bonus,” Mwendwa said.
Mwendwa will face off with five other aspirants for the seat in next Wednesday’s election including incumbent Sam Nyamweya and Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier. Also in contention is former Kenyan international Sammy Shollei, Ssemi Aina and Gor Semelang’o.
OUTSTANDING TALENT
Harambee Stars have continuously struggled to make an impact on the regional and continental scene for the better part of the last decade. This is despite the team boasting of some outstanding talent during that period including former skipper Dennis Oliech, Macdonald Mariga, Victor Wanyama, Arnold Origi and Allan Wanga.
The team’s last competed at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004 when Tunisia hosted the tournament.
The team’s latest disappointments include suffering exits from the Olympic qualifiers, All Africa Games qualifiers, 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, as well as early exits at the 2015 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Ethiopia.
Currently ranked 99th out of the 206 Fifa affiliated nations, Kenya’s woeful returns have been blamed by pundits on a lack of strategy and poor administration.
