Governor Akaranga falls for ‘greetings’ from youth that came at a price

Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga is that latest victim to a ploy from youthful supporters who have formed the habit of coercing politicians to part with cash at public gatherings.

The governor, who is known for his love for sports, fell to the scheme after he was accosted by dozens of youth during a recent football match in Eastlands.

It all started with demands from the youth that the governor “greets” them after watching a National Super League match featuring Vihiga County sponsored Vihiga United and Wazito FC at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho, Nairobi.

HANDOUTS

No sooner had the match ended, than Akaranga would come face to face with the youths who had strategically positioned themselves at the exit of the grounds.

While some blocked the governor’s white Landcruiser, others started demanding that he addresses them and pays “parking fees”.

The governor was left with no choice other than obliging even as his bodyguards endured a hectic time trying to control the crowd.

Tales of youth accosting politicians and aspiring politicians and demanding money are on the rise, especially during this campaign period.

Just two months ago, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero’s motorcade was stoned by angry youths in Kawangware even after dishing out cash after he had witnessed the signing of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition agreement.
