How African fans’ group spiced up Kenya vs Ghana match
Rarely do you ever see fans of opposing teams coming together with a unity of purpose during competitive football matches. But that is exactly what happened on Saturday at Kasarani.
Kenyan fans and their Ghanaian counterparts teamed up to rally support for their respective national teams in this thrilling 2019 Africa Nations Cup qualifying match.
Under the Coalition of Supporters Union of Africa (COSUA), and the Kenya Football Fans Association (KEFOFA), the two lobby groups also showed support for Morocco, which recently lost out in its bid to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
COSUA and KEFOFA also assured the North African country of more support from African supporters in the event it enters another bid for the 2030 Fifa World Cup.
“This was a good game, congratulations to Kenya for winning and Ghana for putting up a fight,” COSUA president Sarfo Arbebrese told Nairobi News.
GOODIES FOR KENYAN FANS
Arbebrese, who is Ghanaian, flew to Nairobi with a dozen fans to watch this match and also chaired a meeting of Kenyan fans who were led by Francis Liboyi.
“Football without fans is nothing. I’m delighted for the support Kenyans gave their team and how they welcomed us to Nairobi. We are looking to repeat this initiative all over Africa and especially during the international matches and specific league games because African football is the most exciting in the world,” he said.
COSUA and KEFOFA also distributed 100 tickets for Kenyan fans to watch the match, while also awarding each fan a branded t-shirt. The fans also displayed banners showing support for African football and Morocco.
Despite missing out on the services of some of their dependable players including Victor Wanyama, Brian Mandela and Ayub Timbe, Kenya squeezed a 1-0 win over Ghana.
The result revived Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
