8 million reasons why Starlets hope to win Afcon title
The national women football team will pocket Sh8 million if it wins the women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
This biennial continental competition kicks off in Cameroon on November 19, with the Harambee Starlets set to face defending champions Nigeria, Ghana and Mali in Group B matches at the Stade Minucipal de Limbe.
The other teams in the tournament are Egypt, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea who are pooled in Group A.
According to a circular released by the Confederation of African Football on Wednesday, the winning team in this competition will take home Sh 8 million.
Meanwhile, the runners up will pocket Sh 4 million, semi-finalists will earn Sh 2.5 million, while all competing teams will be entitled to Sh2 million in participation fees.
CAF COMPETITIONS
Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa has announced that the side is aiming to achieve at the very least a semi-final finish.
The Starlets are already in Cameroon, having played and lost 2-1 to the host teams in a build up match at the Omni Sport Stadium in Yaoundé over the weekend.
However, the prize money in the tournament is the lowest compared to the amount handed out in other Caf competitions.
For instance, the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations competition in Gabon next year will pocket Sh400 million, the same amount as the team that wins the Caf Champions League.
Infact, Kenya’s Tusker FC stand to pocket Sh47 million should they make it to the group stage of the Champions League, while Ulinzi Stars will pocket Sh25 million if they reach the group stage of Caf Confederations Cup.
