Speaker Magelo wields big stick at county reps

March 9th, 2014 1 min read

County assembly Speaker Alex ole Magelo has warned Nairobi County Representatives against having physical confrontations with county executives.

County representatives have lately taken to storming the offices of County Executives and the Speaker now wants the trend to stop.

The Speaker said County Representatives are bringing disrepute to the County Assembly.

“It is unbecoming of members to pay unsolicited courtesy calls to executive officers within the county and cause commotion over one issue or the other,” said Mr Magelo in a communication to the MCAs.

Oversight mandate

He told them that the Constitution, relevant statutes and standing orders provided them with enough avenues to exercise their legislative, representative or oversight mandates.

“Nowhere is physical confrontation provided for as an avenue for oversight,” he added.

Unlike the national government, the Assembly and the Executive are housed together at City Hall and the ward representatives are usually seen moving on the Executive wing of the expansive building.

The speaker also took issue with the dressing code during committee meetings, saying that it will not be taken lightly for those who attend in casual dressing.

“The chair takes great exception to members who are increasingly attending committee sittings in t-shirts, open shoes or other unauthorised attire. The chairpersons of committees are therefore advised to strictly enforce the provisions of our regulations and the Speaker’s rules on this matter,” he added.

Mr Magelo has also criticised the MCAs for not attending sittings.

The County Representatives had last week complained that their salaries are not enough which has forced them to look for extra money elsewhere.
