Sonko makes fresh corruption allegations against Kidero

The associates of Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero during his time in Mumias Sugar Company are beneficiaries of major contracts within the County, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has claimed.

In what could be a serious case of procurement malpractice, the Senator stated that some of the tenders were completely flawed.

The senator also said the county has failed to account for Sh61 million.

“Millions meant for service delivery is ending up in individual’s pockets,” he said. “The same corruption networks that fleeced Mumias Sugar Company are now fleecing our county.”

Mr Sonko claimed that in a case of a county hotel, an advertisement was placed a year after lease documents were already signed to a company associated with the County Chief Of Staff Mr George Wainaina.

MS Safari Club apparently got lease to County’s Bowling Green Hotel through a letter dated July 2013 but an advertisement calling for expression of interest in the County Website was put out on March 14 2014.

The Flamboyant senator wrote to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission which he claims has refused to act on  the matter.

FLEECED COMPANY

The senator also made corruption allegations against Governor Kidero including “dishing out” tenders to his friends.

He tabled documents during the official opening of the county assembly which he claimed showed that the County’s Chief of Staff George Wainaina owns a firm, Cups Limited, that has been doing business with the county.

Sonko added that he had visited Mumias Sugar and confirmed that Mr Wainaina had done business with the company and had fleeced the company Sh3 million from supply of sugar that he did not pay for.

Mr Wainaina could however not be reached for comment as he did not pick our calls nor answer text messages.

Mr Sonko also questioned the appointment of Lawyer Tom Ojienda as the county lawyer saying the advocate also serves as Dr Kidero’s family attorney.

Mr Ojienda, according to court proceedings tabled by the Senator, had also represented Mumias Sugar Company during Dr Kidero’s tenure at its helm.

Another former Mumias Company executive, Mr James Hongo, has also been a beneficiary of County tenders.

WON TENDER

Mr Hongo is the General Manger of Sifa Cleaning and Bins Services Limited which has won a tender to collect garbage in Kileleshwa, Kangemi and Lavington.

According to a company search tabled by the Senator, Sifa was registered in July 22 2014 although City hall officials had stated that it was prequalified to collect garbage at Dagoretti in 2013.

The Nairobi Senator claims this network of former associates are fleecing the County. He also tabled documents alleging that some Directors who worked for the County had been involved in a fraudulent incident against it.

Search documents show that Mr Mohmed Adan Ibrahim is a Director in Peposi, a company which had only been in existence for four days and had laid claim to Sh45million shillings for garbage collection.

The Senator claims the Same Mohamed works for the County through a debt collection firm called Quids Enterprises Limited where he holds 350 shares.

Another Quids enterprise Limited Director Mr Joseph Kula Mato also doubles up as a Director of Sifa Cleaning and Bins Services.

The senator said he is willing to present himself before the County Assembly oversight Committees to repeat his allegations.
