Sonko and Kenneth in a dogfight as Kidero tops opinion poll


Majority of eligible voters in Nairobi would re-elect Dr Evans Kidero as governor if elections were to be held.

According to a survey by research firm Infotrak released on Monday, 35 per cent of voters in Nairobi would cast their votes for Dr Kidero.

Governor Kidero sits at the top in a crowded field of at least six gubernatorial aspirants.

He has a 10 per cent headstart over his nearest rival Senator Mike Sonko who would be supported by 23 per cent of the voters.

Former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth came in third polling 20.2 per cent of the respondents interviewed.

Lawyer Miguna Miguna came in fourth with a paltry 1.2 per cent of the votes, former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru is fifth with 0.9 per cent, politician Esther Passaris had 0.8 per cent, while Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru finished last with 0.6 per cent.

A whopping 18 per cent of the voters were not yet decided on who they would back if the elections were to be held.

The poll was conducted between March 18 and 19,

It shows a close race between Senator Sonko and Mr Kenneth with less than 3 per cent separating them. The two are also currently locked in a fierce battle in the Jubilee Party’s nomination contest.

Nairobi County has over 1.6 million registered voters according to the latest data from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
