Sonko adds a chopper to his rescue team fleet

Nairobi’s flamboyant Senator Mike Sonko has added a helicopter to his rescue team that offers free emergency services to city residents.

The senator on Tuesday posted a photo of himself standing by the helicopter together with a fleet of top of the range SUV vehicles.

This was after Nairobi governor Evans Kidero had unveiled three new ambulances.

“These are the ambulances to serve Nairobians. Managed by professionals, backed with medical facilities,” said Walter Mong’are, the director of communications at the governor’s office

The Sonko rescue team comprises of ambulances, hearses, security patrol cars and limousines. He hires them out for free.

City residents holding weddings get free limousines to use from a fleet of three H2 Hummers, four Mercedes Benzes (New S Class Model) and Sonko’s personal bling-plated Land Cruiser.

The senator’s team claims to have facilitated 21 weddings in the county.

He was also hailed for rescuing veteran Vitimbi comedian Mzee Ojwang’ and offering free hearses during the burial of three children killed in Korogocho by a depressed neighbour. The three were laid to rest at the Langata Cemetery.

Last Friday, however, differences between Senator Sonko and his political nemesis governor Kidero escalated when the latter ordered all vehicles in the Sonko rescue team be impounded for lacking licences.

“As a city, everything should be done within the law,” said Dr Kidero.

Sonko is angling to replace Dr Kidero as governor in the 2017 general election.
