Sofapaka fall to Zimbabwean opponents

GOtv Shield champions Sofapaka began their Caf Confederations Cup campaign with a 2-1 loss to Zimbabwe’s Platinum Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Batoto ba Mungu capitulated early in the match with Brian Muzondiwa firing his team ahead in the 24th minute.

Abdul Fiston restored parity immediately after half time but his effort was later cancelled by Donald Ngoma’s 74th minute goal.

The visitors required little time to settle and were the better team for the better part of the match, with the attacking line marshalled by Muzondiwa and Walter Mtaua constantly threatening the Sofapaka back line that badly missed the reliable Eugene Asike and Collins Shivachi.

GOOD CHANCES

Danson Kago and Fiston had created and squandered three good chances in the first 20 minutes. After conceding the first goal, the home team searched for an equalizer, but their opponents proved stronger.

In his efforts to clear a dangerous ball in the 74th minute, skipper Felly Mulumba sent the ball on the Ngoma’s feet and the midfielder clipped the ball over Okello and into the top of the net.

Enock Agwanda and Fiston got into a wonderful exchange in the 84th minute before the latter sent the ball to Anthony Ndolo, but he was dispossessed by the Zimbabwean defenders.

A disappointed coach Sam Timbe admitted that his team wasted several chances, but insisted that turning their fortunes around in the return leg is not impossible.

“When you don’t take your chances, God punishes you and that is what happened to us today. We created many chances but we could not convert any of them. It is however very possible to make amends and win the tie,” Timbe said.
