Six people arrested in probe into activist Caroline Mwatha’s death

February 12th, 2019 2 min read

Six people were on Tuesday arrested in connection to an alleged botched abortion that reportedly led to the death of activist Caroline Mwatha.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said investigators had established that she was last in constant communication with one Alexander Gitau Gikonya, who works in Isiolo County.

Alexander was arrested alongside a Dandora clinic owner Betty Akinyi Nyanya alias Betty Ramoya her son Richard Ramoya Abudo, a ‘Dr’ Mike Onchiri alias Dr Mike, Stephen Maina, an Uber driver and one Georgia Achieng Tabitha.

“We appeal for patience as we continue with the investigations. We wish to condole with the family of the deceased and assure them that justice will be done in this matter. Any persons involved in any manner in this death will be brought to book,” Kinoti wrote.

Police are investigating the matter even as Caroline’s family cried foul refuting the abortion claims.

Caroline’s father Stanlaus Mbai accused police of spreading false reports to divert the public from the alleged murder of his daughter, which he blamed on her line of work in the community.

“We had an organized search we divided ourselves in groups and my sons were in the group that visited Kenyatta hospital and city mortuary. They started with the hospital on Friday there was only one unidentified patient whom they confirmed was not Caro, they proceeded to the mortuary and never found her name or any unidentified body so how comes now her body had been brought in on Thursday under the name Caro? Why is the record cancelled over and over? This is not adding up and we ask the police to do real investigations,” he said.

The family claims that Caroline’s brother’s searched for her body at the morgue on Friday and Saturday yet police say it was brought in on Thursday early morning.
