Six men who striped woman naked in Kayole jailed for five years

Six men who sparked the My Dress, My Choice, slogan in 2014 after assaulting a Kayole woman have been convicted and sentenced to a jail term of five years each by a Nairobi court.

The court ruled that the prosecution presented enough evidence against the accused persons who were filmed assaulting a woman in Nairobi for allegedly dressing indecently.

The six accused, Michael Kamau Samwel, Zachary Gitonga Nderitu, Kelvin Njuguna Waina, Davii Kinuthia Mbatha, Hosea Kasim and Lawrence Kuria Njeru were filmed sexually assaulting the accused in a viral video which has since been removed from YouTube.

In the video clip, the victim was heard screaming in terror as members of the public watched without intervening.

The incident caused an uproar in Kenya where thousands took to social media using the hashtag #MyDressMyChoice in support of the victim.

CONVICTED

In its ruling on Friday, the court found the six men guilty of the offence and duly convicted them to a five-year jail term each.

“There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that the accused persons indeed committed the offence as the evidence is conclusive and compelling enough to find a conviction. As such, I find the accused persons guilty of indecent act with an adult. I hereby convict the accused persons to five years jail term each,” the judgment reads in part.

During the trial, the victim, Regina Nyambura, had shocked the court when she pleaded to have the case against the six withdrawn.

However, the prosecution rejected the application on grounds that the matter was of public interest and that violent robbery is a serious offence in the country.
