LIVE: Mutindwa accident death toll rises

The morning accident involved an Umoinner matatu and a city bound train at Mutindwa level crossing, near Buruburu.

  • 10:30: Rift Valley Railways (RVR) admits that the Mutindwa intersection does not have a Railway Crossing sign. Company attributes Wednesday’s accident to reckless driving.

 

  • “It was wrong for the bus to park on the rail road. Despite the train hooting, the bus did not move in response to the oncoming train,” the company said in a statement.

 

  • 10:25: Police say death toll has risen to 11. Seven people were confirmed dead at the Mama Lucy Hospital, one died while being transfered to Kenyatta National Hospital, three bodies were collected at the scene of the accident. Bodies taken to City Mortuary. This is according to Buruburu deputy OCPD Benjamin Nyamai.

 

  • 10: 20: The number of victims taken to Mama Lucy Hospital is 34.

 

  • 9:30: The death toll from the accident has risen to nine.

 

UPDATE:  The matatu was headed to the city center after picking morning commuters on Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: 29 people injured in the accident rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital.
