Six dead, scores injured in Al-Shabaab attack on Mandera buses

Six people have been killed and scores injured in Mandera after Al Shabaab militants attacked two buses on Friday morning, according to area county commissioner Mr Frederick Shisia.

“Security teams have arrived at the scene and we are waiting for more information from them,” he said.

The attack happened in Wargadud area, Mandera.

Mr Shisia said the first bus managed to drive through the ambush but some passengers were injured, while the second bus stalled due to heavy shooting.

The two buses that were attacked belong to Tawakal and e Coach bus companies respectively.

The Tawakal bus managed to drive on and by press time was at Wargadud Town while e Coach bus was still at the scene.

“We will be giving more information but we are getting ready to head there,” Mr Shisia said.

A Kenya Police Reservist is among the dead and another is said to be in critical condition.

“Police declined to escort buses within Mandera leaving the responsibility to KPRs. These KPRs were inside the bus that was attacked,” said a security officer who did not want to be named.

On Thursday, the government had warned non-locals against travelling to or from Mandera by road.
