Shocking images lay bare havoc caused by heavy rains in Nairobi


The Nairobi News has accessed these exclusive pictures that lay bare the misery Nairobians have endured as a result of the heavy rainfall that has pounded the city in the in the last two days.

Cars and houses were swept away, property destroyed, while some residents had to contend with  filthy sewer water flowing into in their houses.

Our photojournalist Jeff Angote reports that water levels have reached ceiling of the houses at the National Housing Corporation estate in Nairobi West.

He adds that a man drowned Tuesday night at the South C mosque.

“All the houses in about 10 flats have flood water in their houses,” says Joan Ayaga, a resident of NHC.

Area residents have resorted to hoisting their household goods inside their houses to ensure that they are not wet.

“There is a stream near T Mall that broke its banks and all the water swept through NHC estate,” said Dorothy Rautta, also a NHC resident.

Carol Owino, another area resident said the rain pounded from 7 p.m. till 4 a.m.
