Sex orgy club owner and students charged in court

The manager of a disco where 550 students were arrested during an orgy of drugs, alcohol and sex has been charged in an Eldoret court.

Sixteen of the 70 students aged over 18 who were seized in the club pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly and were fined Sh500 each.

The manager of Sam’s Discotheque, Mr Benson Kimatu, denied charges of selling alcohol to minors, operating without a licence and using a basement illegally.

He was remanded in custody until today, after the prosecution asked the court to order that Mr Kimatu be held in custody so that more charges relating to the Children’s Act could be preferred against him.

The children, aged between 12 and 18, were arrested on Sunday night by police and officials from the Uasin Gishu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board.

SMOKING BHANG

They were found consuming alcohol and smoking bhang and other drugs. Condoms were found strewn around the disco, some of them used, the court was told.

Defence lawyer Maina Mathai said his client is a man of good deeds and asked the court to grant him reasonable bail terms. He said the prosecution did not have enough evidence against his client.

The club, just 30 metres across the road from Eldoret’s main police station, routinely hosts “jam session” parties for teenagers on Sunday afternoons.

“The court has the power to release an accused person on bond without being compromised. My client will be available whenever called upon,” said Mr Mathai. He also asked to be furnished with the witness statements.
