Sex-change person sues Knec

A person has moved to court seeking to have the national examinations agency change the name in her certificate to that of a man.

Ms Dorcas Wangui alias John Karanja claimed she was born and raised a girl but a doctor informed her she was a boy after she started experiencing changes in her body.

“The changes traumatised and depressed me. I even dropped out of school after the doctor told me I was male and not female,” said Wangui in her affidavit.

Ms Wangui said failure by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to act on her request for a change of name or amendment on the KCPE certificate was affecting her right to education.

The petitioner claimed she had her first corrective surgery at a Nairobi hospital in February this year.
