Search for cop in killing case stepped up

The police have stepped up the search for a Mpeketoni police officer facing manslaughter charges following the death of a 22-year-old woman.

Ms Margaret Njeri was fatally hit on the head on January 17 when the officer threw his gun at a motorcyclist ferrying her, according to the woman’s mother.

The officer, who has been in hiding since Monday last week, has not yet been found, prompting Lamu County Criminal Investigations officer Prosper Bosire to intensify the search for the suspect.

Mr Bosire said officers are still looking for the fugitive who has since switched off his phone. Officers from the National Intelligence Service are assisting in the search.

He told the Daily Nation on Monday that the officer had also changed his mobile phone number, complicating the search. He, however, said the police had put measures in place to ensure the officer is arrested as soon as possible.

“We are pursuing some crucial leads and we hope to arrest him soon,” said Mr Bosire.

Meanwhile, the family of Ms Njeri has asked the police to disclose the identity of the officer. Their lawyer George Wakahiu said the name, photographs and descriptions of the officer must be publicized so that the public can help in his arrest.

Mr Wakahiu said it is difficult for the man to be traced since the public does not have any information about him.

“Let information about the officer be displayed in public places so that we have him arrested by wananchi,” said Mr Wakahiu on the phone.

The family is currently going on with funeral arrangements in Lamu but have not yet settled on a date.

On Monday morning, well-wishers raised more than Sh2.7 million to help the family offset a Sh2.5 million hospital bill. The pledge was made on a Kameme FM talk show.

The well-wishers raised the amount within two hours using Safaricom Pay Bill Number 317077.

Mr Wakahiu said he hopes the family will eventually get justice through the arrest and prosecution of the officer.
