How brave girl risked life to rescue colleagues from school fire
A girl who saved her schoolmates during Moi Girls School fire tragedy is fighting for her life in the ICU at Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
Mary Mokaya, 16, was woken up by the fumes and started waking up the rest of the girls to rush out of the dormitory.
Her act was hailed by the survivors who thanked her for waking them up and ending up with 66 per cent burns.
Her mother, Florence Agoto, told journalists at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital that her daughter has always been kind.
“She is a merciful and kind child and since the parents of the children she saved are also praying for her, I am hopeful she shall be well,” said the mother.
BADLY BURNT
Mary was badly burnt to the point of not being easy to identify as it took the teacher who brought her to the hospital to identify her with the help of parents.
The parents whose children are still unaccounted for were also claiming Mary until her mother clearly identified her.
Eight students perished when fire burnt down Kabarnet dormitory that housed all the school’s 338 Form One students.
The eight were burnt beyond recognition and no parent could recognise any of the bodies on Saturday when government officials allowed them to view the bodies.
The students died when fire broke out at around 2 am at a section of the one-storey dorm called “Extension” which, according to two survivors, had the highest concentration of students.
