School fails to attend national drama festivals due to lack of funds

Eastern region drama champions are stranded at their school after failing to raise Sh65,000 needed to finance their trip to the ongoing national drama festivals in Nakuru.

Drama club members from Nyaki Njeru Primary School in Chiakariga, Tharaka Nithi county, are unable to attend the national competition despite being the best in the Eastern Regional competitions.

The school’s  headteacher Muthengi Gaicu said the pupils are depressed and discouraged after the school failed to raise Sh65, 000 to attend the national competition which started on Monday.

He said the school had been judged the best in the Film Category but could not raise the amount to take the pupils in the next level.

Mr Gaicu added that the preparations of the drama had depleted the school resources, but all the hard work seems destined to end ‘unceremoniously’.

PUPILS STRAINED

“These pupils have strained to practice film making and also took a lot of their time in preparation but due to lack of funds they may not witness the memorable event,” lamented Mr Gaicu.

He added that the pupils had a chance to learn more in the national festivals, considering that the Film Category is a newly introduced genre in the competitions and could be good ambassadors of their county.

“If our pupils could attend the nationals it could be a great chance to learn and also teach other schools in the county on this new category which is becoming very popular in the country,” argued Mr Gaicu.

Mr Gaicu said that their remaining option is to take the recorded film to the judges for adjudication and bring back the results to the school.

He termed his pupils as a very talented team and hopes to beat other nine contenders in the nationals.
