Rugby referees deny strike claims

The Kenya Rugby Referees Society has denied claims of a strike after officials failed to turn up for three games at the weekend.

KRRS Chairman Peris Mukoko said several officials were unavailable, forcing the home teams in the Mombasa versus Mwamba, Mean Machine versus Impala and Blak Blad versus Nondies games to provide officials.

“There was early communication from the KRRS that several officials would be unavailable for some games, and the rumours of the strike are false. Unless you have seen any official document on the same, then there is no such thing,” said Mukoko.

Rumours had been flying over the weekend that the officials were demanding dues of over Sh5 million from the Kenya Rugby Union for their services over the last three years.

The Blak Blad versus Nondies match went sour after the latter opted to walk off the pitch while leading 8-6 with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, citing biased officiating from the centre referee.

Nondies II had also walked off the pitch just before half time in their Eric Shirley Shield tie, but returned to the pitch a few minutes later.

The final decision on the outcome of the game will be made tomorrow after the KRU has finished investigations into the happenings at Kenyatta University.
