Rongai chief denies harbouring immigrants


A Rongai assistant chief was taken to  Kibera court on Friday to answer charges of harboring two foreigners in his house in Olekasasi area in Ongata Rongai.

The court heard that the Maasai Lodge sub location Assistant chief, identified as Abdirizak Hassan, was arrested by Ongata Rongai CID officers on May 8 with foreigners Bishard Yussuf and Abdullahi Saidi .

The assistant chief denied the charges before resident magistrate R Ondieki and requested the court to release him in bail.

The court released him on a ksh 500,000 bail with Kenyan sureties who should be residents of Kenya.

The assistant chief’s case will be heard on August 14th 2014.

The immigrants, who were also arraigned in court, will appear again on Monday with interpreters since they could only speak in Somali.

Rongai DCIO Dickson Kasyoki said that they arrested the assistant chief and the immigrants on Thursday evening after being tip by the public.

The incident comes after residents of Ongata Rongai raised a red flag on suspicious people believed to be immigrants in Olekasasi area in the outskirts of Rongai town.

The residents said that there had been suspicious people who they believe fled the police swoops in Nairobi.

A resident, who sought anonymity, alleged that in the past one month people were being transported to area by private vehicles at night hours.

He said that the people disappear mysteriously to unknown premises after being dropped in the area.
